GAMEWEEK 15, CAPTAIN CHOICES , PREMIER LEAGUE FANTASY FOOTBALL 2018/19

H17 2018-12-04 Captain Choice

THE BUSIEST PERIOD OF THE SEASON IS WELL AND TRULY UNDERWAY, AS WE BRACE FOR ANOTHER GAMEWEEK. HERE ARE MY TOP 3 CAPTAIN PICKS FOR THE WEEK.

1. HARRY KANE (VS SOT H)

The Kane train took its time this season – but it has well and truly warmed up and is hitting full steam ahead. The Spurs talisman has now returned in all of his last 4 fixtures. He has 3 goals and 1 assist, despite facing Chelsea and Arsenal in his last 2 games – taking 19 shots in this period. Spurs’ fixtures are aligned nicely for the busy Christmas period. With Kane being guaranteed to start every game when fit, he could be a vital cog in many teams for the festive period up ahead.

Although Kane has not quite been at his explosive best yet this season, he has quietly racked up the goals – only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored more goals than Kane this season. With playmaker-in-chief Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli back from intermittent absences, Kane’s service should only improve from here on. It was this very hectic period Kane hit top form last season, too. He scored 8 goals in 5 games played over just 17 days in December – which included a hat-trick against this week’s opponents, Southampton.

Managerless Southampton is one of the best opponents he can feed on. The Saints have conceded 12 goals in their last 4 games, keeping no clean sheets in November. Their record against the top 6 sides reads very poorly this season too. The south coast side have let in 14 goals in their 4 games against Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea. Away from home, this game is all set to be a rout – expect Kane to be at the forefront.

Only owned by 25.3% managers, with the most owned attacker, Sergio Aguero, most likely out for this week – Kane could be an excellent pick to propel you up the ranks.

2. MOHAMED SALAH (VS BUR A)

Despite a disappointing outing against a now-resolute Everton side, I again plump for Mo Salah as my second choice pick. Although after last season, Salah’s form might seem lukewarm. But he has slowly warmed into consistency – with 4 goals and 2 assists in his last 6 games. In a week with not many outstanding captain candidates, Salah offers decent form and an excellent fixture. With Sadio Mane likely to miss out, the onus will be on Salah to deliver for Liverpool – and he rarely doesn’t.

This week’s fixture is what catches the eye most for the Egyptian winger. He faces a Burnley side in immense strife. The Clarets have conceded 29 goals in 14 games – only second to bottom of the table Fulham. Of those, 17 conceded have come in their last 6 games. Over this period, they have conceded a stratospheric 135 shots in just 6 games – with 29 of those coming against the rather profligate Crystal Palace this weekend. Surely, Liverpool’s attack will be licking their lips, and so will Salah, their de facto striker of late, in particular.

In 35.3% of all teams, Salah is the joint-most owned premium attacker likely to feature this week. Ownership wise, he represents the safest pick this week.

3. PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG (VS MUN A) – DIFFERENTIAL PUNT

This time last season, Man Utd away would be the worst fixture possible for an attacker. They had only conceded 1 goal at Old Trafford by Gameweek 14. However, times change quick – and suddenly, Man Utd is an attractive fixture for opposition marksmen. The Red Devils have conceded 23 goals this season – the most of any team outside the bottom 5. They have kept only 2 clean sheets in 14 games – compared to 9 this time last season. Even their home form has seen a drastic change – they have conceded 8 goals at home already, having conceded just 9 all of last season.

Man Utd’s defensive woes are even more compounded by their injury troubles. Phil Jones was their only fit center-back on the weekend. DDefensive midfielders Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic had to flank him in a shaky 3-man defense. Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly, who missed out with injury, might have to be rushed back. Marcos Rojo is also returning from a longer-term injury, with Victor Lindelof out long term. Fullback Ashley Young is suspended, while Luke Shaw was subbed off at St. Mary’s due to a knock.

This sets it up perfectly for Arsenal, and Aubameyang to take full advantage of a defense that has been shaky when fully fit – let alone with so many injuries. Arsenal have been in rousing form of their own. No team has kept a clean sheet against them, since leaders Man City in Gameweek 1. Their tally of 32 goals is only second to City.

At the forefront of that has been striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He now leads the Premier League scoring charts with 10 goals. 8 goals and 2 assists have come in the last 7 games – and his form is showing no signs of stopping. The Gabonese striker has scored with each of his last 10 shots on target too, with the last save from his shot coming all the way back in Gameweek 3.

Now the highest scoring forward in the game, Aubameyang is in 21.8% of all teams. But with that fixture’s reputation, you can be assured not many of those will captain him, making him a viable differential punt.

Note: I have ignored Raheem Sterling despite his superb form because the lingering possibility of a rest against Watford. With safer alternatives assured to start this week, captaining Sterling could prove to be risky – you want your captain to be assured of starting, as a bare minimum.
