AFTER A WEEK AND A HALF LONG HIATUS, IT’S THAT TIME OF THE WEEK AGAIN. FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE IS BACK, AND SO IS THE TIME TO PONDER UPON OUR ARMBAND CONTENDERS.
1) Segio Aguero vs WBA Home
Last week’s top captaincy pick, ex-Fantasy royalty Aguero reminded us all of what he can do at his destructive best – pull off a hat-trick on a day people who watched his performance would call an off-day. Now let’s just think what he can do on an on-day. In the best form of the season, Aguero has scored 8 goals and assisted 1 in 6 games this month. It seems as if Gabriel Jesus’ injury has spurred the Argentinean to his best, back as the undoubted leader of the City pack. With the Brazilian still a bit away from his comeback, Aguero, rested and raring after just a cameo against Cardiff, should be in for points again.
He’ll be up against 19th placed West Brom, a side very much in turmoil. Although they might have won against Liverpool on the weekend – they still shipped 2. And Aguero knows the Baggies inside out now. He has 7 goals and 5 assists against them in just 10 encounters.
If you don’t want the overwhelmingly safe pick, or the overwhelmingly punty pick, Aguero’s the man.
2) Mo Salah vs Huddersfield Away
Perhaps the most in-form player in the game over the long term, Salah is the number one choice for the week. Despite his latest blank against Swansea City, Salah is as in-form as it can get. With 123 points in his last 13 games, his points per game over this period is touching an almost biblical 10. He shrugged off the Swansea disappointment almost immediately too – with a goal in Liverpool’s 2-3 defeat to West Brom in the FA Cup, almost as if to remind us of his virtually unstoppable prowess.
Up against minnows Huddersfield, he’ll surely fancy his chances. The Terriers, who started off with some resounding defensive prowess, have looked extremely frail lately. They’ve now conceded 9 goals in their past 3 games, including a 1-4 thrashing at home by West Ham, where they’ll take the Reds on. We all know how strongly Jurgen Klopp’s men bounce back after setbacks. After perhaps the worst week of their season, with defeats to lowly Swansea and West Brom, they’ll be a wounded tiger. And just look at last month to see how strongly they bounce back – 0-0 against West Brom, followed by 4-0 against Bournemouth. Draw against Arsenal, followed by 5-0 against Swansea. Salah will surely be at the forefront of it.
Owned by 55.1% of all players, Salah is as safe as a captaincy pick can get. Make your way to the bank.
Punt : Marcos Alonso vs BOU H
I’ve always said how captaining defenders can go horribly wrong. But for this week’s differential punt, I’ll imagine how magnificently right it can go. Take one of the league’s tightest defenses – Chelsea, who have conceded 2 goals in their last 6 games, with 5 clean sheets. At home, it’s 1 in the last 7. Put it together with one of the most fearsome defenders, in the attacking sense of the word. A man who bombs up like a winger, and takes a mean free-kick. A man that has scored 3 goals in his last 7 games. And you get, potentially, the only defender who you can give a thought of captaining.
He’ll be up against Bournemouth, who are averaging just about a goal per game this season. The Cherries have struggled in front of goal, partly due to innumerable injuries to their firepower. A clean sheet seems almost certain – if he scores, you’re looking at a 15 pointer.
It can go horribly wrong, but it can go magnificently right. Not for the weak hearted.
