FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE Fantasy Premier League – Gameweek 17 – Top 3 Captain Picks

AS WE MOVE INTO YET ANOTHER MIDWEEK GAMEWEEK, IT’S TIME TO LOOK AT MY TOP 3 CAPTAIN PICKS FOR THE GAMEWEEK AGAIN. TWO OF LAST WEEK’S 3 PICKS, SALAH AND KANE, SCORED OVER 10 POINTS.
1. HARRY KANE (VS BHA H)
With the Wembley woes crushed to bits with a brace against Stoke, it’s that man again, at the top of the picks. It was evident that he had to come off some day, and he did, with a 12-point haul last week. He was relentless throughout the game as well, troubling the Stoke defense with 7 shots. With the most expensive player in the game now building some serious form – he now has 4 goals in his last 4 – it’s hard to look past him.
What Kane offers over other top candidates – the Salah’s, the Hazard’s and the Morata’s – is safety. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Antonio Conte leave out Hazard and/or Morata on Tuesday night. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Jurgen Klopp wrap Salah in cotton wool after the win is sealed against West Brom early on. However, with Kane, we know for certain, he’ll start. He’ll almost certainly play 90 minutes, having had his rest last midweek. Of course, the others may still end up scoring big points, but it’s all about maximizing the odds. And nothing does that more so than having a player that’ll start and play 90 minutes.
The opponents, Brighton, couldn’t come at a better time either. Having started off well defensively, the fixture pile-up seems to be getting to the narrow Seagulls squad. After conceding 14 in the first 14 games, they have now conceded 7 goals in their past 2 games. 5 of them came against a Liverpool side that thoroughly exposed Brighton to the harsh reality of the Premier League. With their honeymoon period over, and Kane’s Wembley woes over, they should prove to be easy meat.
Goals have seemed to come in twos for Kane this season. Will it be the case yet again?
2. MOHAMED SALAH (VS WBA H)
If you don’t own Kane, Salah is your man. With his ownership burgeoning to 55.6%, Salah continues to provide a mix of consistency and explosiveness. The Egyptian now has a remarkable 9 goals and 2 assists in his last 8 games. The last time he blanked was against Man Utd all the way back in GW8, now almost 2 months ago. Perhaps the only worry around Salah is his game time. He should start against West Brom, having been hooked off at the hour mark on Sunday. The draw against Everton, after resting Coutinho and Firmino, should deter Klopp further. However, having not gotten a rest lately, he could very well be hooked off again around 60 minutes if the game is won.
Despite that, he should be in the points. The only case in which Salah goes off early is if the game is won, and by that time, he’ll have had a hand in that. Liverpool have been at their free-scoring best recently, having scored 41 goals in their last 12 games. And you can expect Salah to be at the forefront again. Although their opponents West Brom have been decent defensively, they’ve had their struggles against the big sides, having conceded 10 goals in 4 games. And a Liverpool side, at the top of their game, at Anfield, should perhaps prove to be too much for the Baggies.
You can’t go wrong with Salah either.
3. KEVIN DE BRUYNE (VS SWA A) – DIFFERENTIAL PUNT
If the commonplace choices don’t do the trick for you, perhaps de Bruyne’s your man. Man City have ripped apart all but one team in their sights this season, scoring for what can only be described for fun. Having scored 48 goals in 16 games, and now on the precipice of a win that will clinch a Premier League record for most consecutive wins, it seems a good idea to get a piece of that action. Although Pep Guardiola’s rotation happy antics have made that tough, de Bruyne seems to be the safest way into the City lineup, having started every single game.
de Bruyne has quietly kept his points ticking, rising to 3rd in the Fantasy points standings, after Salah and Kane. He has returned in 4 of the last 6 games – with 3 goals, 2 assists and 39 points in that period. Amidst the chaos surrounding Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero, de Bruyne has perhaps gone under the radar. Up against second bottom Swansea, he should continue his good run. Although Swansea have kept tight till now, they’ve perhaps been lucky to do so, having conceded 14.1 shots per game so far. And no side is quite like this seemingly invincible Man City side.
It has to be Kane or Salah this week, but if not, de Bruyne’s the safest. I’d avoid Hazard or Morata despite the fixture, given the fixture overload and Conte’s constant hinting towards rotation. Either could easily be on the bench.
